Talk Title :

New Materials: From High Pressure Discovery to Energy Applications

Abstract :

Discovery of new materials with exceptional properties for electronic, energy-related, and other advanced applications is a vibrant frontier in science. This colloquium will present an overview of Prof. Attfield’s pioneering research program, focused on novel transition metal oxides and nitrides synthesized under extreme high-pressure conditions. The talk will highlight collaborative work on nitrides for energy applications, particularly in electro- and photo-catalytic water splitting.

Speaker :

Professor J. Paul Attfield, FRS Professor of Materials Science, University of Edinburgh Director, Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions (CSEC)

Prof. Attfield is internationally renowned for advancing high-pressure and high-temperature synthesis to create novel quantum materials, including complex oxides, nitrides, and unconventional superconductors. His work has provided fundamental insights into charge, orbital, and magnetic order in strongly correlated systems, notably resolving the Verwey transition in magnetite and developing resonant X-ray diffraction methods.

A graduate of the University of Oxford, Prof. Attfield has received major honors including the RSC Corday–Morgan Award and the Peter Day Award, and is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society. His discoveries continue to shape the frontier of materials research, opening pathways to functional materials unattainable at ambient conditions.

Invitation :

We warmly invite faculty, researchers, and students to attend this colloquium. Don’t miss the opportunity to interact with an eminent international scientist and gain a global perspective on cutting-edge materials research.
