IISER Berhampur Researchers Publish Novel Catalytic Strategy for Allylation of Aldehydes in Organic Letters

Overview:

Researchers from the Department of Chemical Sciences at IISER Berhampur, led by Dr. Shikha Gandhi, have reported a new N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)/nickel synergistic catalytic strategy for the direct allylation of aldehydes using Morita–Baylis–Hillman (MBH) carbonates. The study has been published in the prestigious journal Organic Letters.

The research introduces an efficient and regio- as well as stereoselective synthetic methodology that enables the preparation of multi-substituted β,γ-unsaturated ketones, important structural motifs in pharmaceuticals, natural products, and functional organic molecules. The study expands the scope of synergistic catalysis by demonstrating the successful use of nickel in combination with N-heterocyclic carbene catalysis, providing new opportunities for the development of sustainable and efficient synthetic transformations.

The publication highlights IISER Berhampur's continued contributions to advancing modern organic synthesis and catalytic methodology through innovative research in chemical sciences.
