Biography

Dr. Debarati Chattopadhyay is an invertebrate paleontologist whose research focuses on paleoecology, evolutionary biology, and quantitative paleobiology of marine invertebrates, particularly mollusks. Her work explores long-term evolutionary and ecological patterns in marine ecosystems, including predator–prey interactions, body size and shape evolution, paleobiogeography, and the response of marine faunas to climatic and environmental changes through geological time.

Dr. Chattopadhyay completed her Ph.D. in Paleontology from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata and worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. Her research combines global fossil records, field-based morphometric analyses, and statistical modelling to understand evolutionary dynamics and processes in marine systems. She also has experience working on recent molluscan communities, including behavioral and ecological studies of recent mollusks from coastal ecosystems and controlled marine aquarium experimental setups. Her technical expertise includes geometric morphometrics, quantitative data analysis, and paleontological statistics using R, Python, MorphoJ, and related analytical tools.

 

Her future research aims to integrate paleontological and neonatological approaches to better understand long-term marine ecosystem responses to ongoing climate change and environmental stress with implications for biodiversity conservation and coastal ecosystem resilience.
