Biography

Dr Goutam De received his PhD degree from Jadavpur University based on his work done in Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata. He was the Chief Scientist & Head Nano-Structured Materials Division at CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata, Visiting Scientist at INST, Mohali and Emeritus Professor at S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS), Kolkata. Currently, Dr De is a Visiting Faculty at Department of Chemical Sciences, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Berhampur (IISER BPR), Odisha. Based on his contribution, he has received several awards and recognitions namely National Research Award in Nano Science & Technology from Nano Mission, DST, GoI, MRSI-ICSC Superconductivity & Materials Science Annual Prize, Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) Bronze Medal, National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) Meritorious Invention Award, Materials Research Society of India (MRSI) Medal, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) fellowship, Raman Research Fellowship etc.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK (FRSC) and West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology. Dr. De was the Associate Editor of high impact RSC journals ‘Journal of Materials Chemistry A’ (2014 - 2023) and ‘Materials Advances’ (2020 - 2023).

So far, Dr. De has published 171 papers in peer-reviewed journals and filed 9 patents. He has developed and successfully commercialized the technology ‘Anti-scratch coatings on plastic ophthalmic lenses’. Some of his notable contributions in the area of materials chemistry are: plasmon tuning of metal nanoparticles, SERS on shape-tunable Ag nanoplates, reusable catalysts, superhydrophobic surfaces, graphene-based nanocomposites, magnetite nanoparticles, electrospun nanofibers with ordered mesopores, silica and titania nanoparticles, protective coatings on perovskite nanoparticles, mesostructured coatings, high purity clear silica glass shapes by sol-gel, abrasion resistant coatings on large-area plastics etc. Dr. De and group also developed self-cleanable antireflective (AR) coatings on solar cover glasses to enhance photocurrent with easy maintenance, and tested these coatings in real-world outdoor conditions on rooftop PV modules. The installed coated modules demonstrated a power output increase of approximately 6.7–10.5% compared to uncoated modules. These rooftop PV systems were monitored for several years, and no power degradation was observed confirming the durability and effectiveness of these coatings.
